The industrial system
The complex brings together the South Plants, the North Plants and the IGCC Area within the Priolo–Melilli–Siracusa industrial district of eastern Sicily, linked by a pipeline network carrying crude, intermediates and finished products. Three jetties open the site to the sea, through which almost all volumes pass.
North Plants
The North Plants are the site’s gasoline production hub. Primary distillation (topping) runs light and medium-heavy crudes; the FCC line comprises catalytic cracking, alkylation and MTBE. The site has two jetties in Augusta Bay.
A cornerstone of Italy’s energy independence
A decree of the Italian Prime Minister of 3 February 2023 declared the ISAB complex to be of national strategic interest: it accounts for more than a fifth of Italian refining and 20% of Sicilian electricity demand, with around one thousand direct employees and more than two thousand in the contractor workforce.
Renewable fuels from vegetable oils
Since July 2026 the site has produced HVO and SAF, renewable fuels for road and aviation.
